About The Position

Join UChicago Medicine as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) within the Neurosurgery team. As an inpatient Neurosurgery Advanced Practice Provider (APP), you will manage our general neurosurgery and consultative neurosurgery patients and leverage knowledge of critical neurological conditions to care for the adult and pediatric patient populations. Our adult and pediatric Neurosurgery clinical teams have expertise in the treatment of many neurological disorders, including: Brain and spinal cord injuries, Brain infections (encephalitis and meningitis), Brain swelling, Brain tumors, Nerve and muscle problems that affect breathing, such as myasthenia gravis and Guillain-Barré syndrome, Status epilepticus, Stroke, Any catastrophic disorder affecting neurologic function.

Requirements

  • Master of Science in Nursing (for NP)
  • Current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois RN and APN licensure/registration (for NP)
  • Certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurse's Credentialing Center or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (for NP)
  • Ability to qualify for Illinois and DEA prescribing numbers (for NP)
  • Completion of an accredited (Physician Assistant) educational program (for PA)
  • Certification by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) (for PA)
  • Current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois licensure/registration (for PA)
  • Certification in ACLS (for PA)

Nice To Haves

  • Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) certification desired (for NP)
  • Experience in an academic medical center or tertiary/quaternary care setting
  • Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience or training in a surgical setting
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with attending surgeons, residents, fellows, nursing, and ancillary teams
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records (Epic preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of patients and exercise autonomous decision-making in assessing, diagnosing, and initiating delegated medical treatments.
  • Provide family support.
  • Perform discharge planning.
  • Conduct staff education.
  • Provide consultation.
  • Engage in research.
  • Plan, organize, and direct patient care efforts.
  • Collaborate with medical and surgical physicians and other team members.
