About The Position

Join UChicago Medicine as an Advanced Pharmacy Technician in the Discharge Medication Program within the Pharmacy Department. In this role, you will be responsible for various tasks related to dispensing and delivery of medications for patients discharging home from the hospital. You will gain exposure to inpatient care, outpatient pharmacy, and transitions of care. The Advanced Pharmacy Technician plays a key role on our Meds2Beds team to provide optimal patient care at the time of discharge. UChicago Medicine is dedicated to providing patients with the personal service necessary to ensure that they achieve the most benefit from their medication therapy.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) required
  • Current ( or eligible for) Illinois Pharmacy Technician Licensure
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician License (National Certification)
  • 3 to 5 years of pharmacy technician experience in a retail or hospital pharmacy (exceptional aptitude or knowledge may be considered in lieu of experience)
  • Knowledge of and ability to use computers and a variety of computer programs including word processing, database management, and spreadsheets
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively manage conflicts and resolve problems
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to positively influence collaborative alliances, promote teamwork, and ensure a high degree of internal and external customer satisfaction
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced and changing environment with multiple priorities

Responsibilities

  • Fill prescriptions in the outpatient pharmacy
  • Dispense medications in the outpatient pharmacy
  • Transport medications from the outpatient pharmacy to patient bedside, nursing unit, or discharge lounge depending on patient status and inpatient location
  • Coordinate with patients, nursing, patient transportation, public safety, and other team members in the Discharge Lounge
  • Facilitate patient enrollment into the program
  • Coordinate payment for copays or medications not covered by insurance
  • Provide exemplary customer service to all patients
  • Respond to general phone calls from providers and nurses regarding enrolled patients
  • Communicate with patients, nurses, physicians, pharmacists, social workers, case managers, etc. to coordinate discharge medications for patients
  • Document appropriately in patient charts within the electronic medical record
  • Assist with medication inventory/stocking in the outpatient pharmacy
  • Assists in training new employees on the team
  • Perform other duties as requested by management
  • Conduct patient prescription insurance investigation and insurance input into outpatient pharmacy system
  • Process and adjudicate medication claims through insurance
