About The Position

The City of Farmington is seeking an Adult Services Librarian for the Farmington Public Library. This full-time position involves planning, coordinating, and evaluating library programs, providing reference assistance, managing collections, developing marketing materials, and participating in policy development. The role also includes training staff and patrons, analyzing data, enforcing library policies, and potentially supervising staff for specific projects. Additional duties may involve maintaining special collections, web pages, book groups, cataloging, managing interlibrary loans, and Government Documents collections. The position requires representing the library in community and professional settings and ensuring attendance at work, including varied schedules with evenings, weekends, and some holidays. The role also involves operating a motor vehicle for departmental business and complying with all city and library policies.

Requirements

  • Masters of Library Science Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid New Mexico driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends.
  • Extensive working knowledge of reference resources, in both print and non-print formats.
  • Considerable knowledge of principles and practices common to modern library operations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills necessary to work effectively with students, volunteers, and part-time and full-time staff.
  • Ability to understand the technology used at the library, to conduct basic troubleshooting of technology-related issues, and to accurately report issues in a timely manner.
  • Broad practical experience with integrated library systems software and subscription databases.
  • Strong collection development skills required.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of office management, work organization and supervision.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Time management skills sufficient to organize work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel, and the general public.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, to effectively interact with all age levels and cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Experience with public speaking and making presentations.
  • Ability to accurately classify and catalog library materials, based upon a thorough knowledge of library collection, classification, and selection tools and techniques.
  • Ability to perform routine and complex duties as assigned with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to understand verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in work environment.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality, in accordance with library policies and laws.
  • Proficiency with tools, technology and equipment listed below.
  • Subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, implements, and evaluates library programs to meet objectives and community needs.
  • Maintains current knowledge of books, authors, and trends in library services and programs.
  • Provides general and in-depth reference assistance and reader advisory using print and online resources.
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of library collections, including books, periodicals, online databases, and media, and manages budget requirements for collections.
  • Participates in the development of marketing materials for library programs, materials, and services.
  • Participates in the development of policies and standards for collection development and adult services operations.
  • Participates in professional organizations and activities to stay informed of trends in public libraries.
  • Plans and provides instruction and training to library staff and patrons, including outreach programs.
  • Analyzes and interprets data and reports related to department functions and makes recommendations.
  • Interprets and enforces library policies and procedures to staff and the public.
  • May monitor the work of Adult Services staff for specific projects and assist in evaluating the work performance of Library Associate and Reference Technicians.
  • May work on specific projects such as maintaining special collections, developing library web pages, maintaining book groups, assisting with cataloging, managing interlibrary loan operations, and Government Documents collections.
  • May serve as a member of employee committees.
  • Represents the library on various community or professional bodies.
  • Ensures attendance at work, which is an essential function of the position.
  • Understands and follows written and/or verbal instructions.
  • Available to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
  • Participates and attends staff trainings, daily shows, meetings, programs, and other training sessions.
  • Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
  • Complies with Adult Services department and library procedures and policies, and the City's guidelines, rules, regulations, procedures, and policies.
