About The Position

The City of Farmington is seeking an Adult Services Librarian to join their team. This position works under the guidance of the Adult Services Coordinator, planning, coordinating, and evaluating library programs. The role involves staying current with literature and library trends, providing reference assistance, and contributing to collection development and maintenance. The librarian will also participate in marketing, policy development, and professional development activities. Instruction and training for staff and patrons are key responsibilities, as is analyzing data and enforcing library policies. The position may involve supervising staff on specific projects, assisting with special collections, web page development, managing book groups, cataloging, interlibrary loans, and Government Documents. Representation of the library on community or professional bodies may also be required. Attendance at work, understanding instructions, and working a varied schedule including evenings, weekends, and some holidays are essential. Participation in staff trainings, meetings, and programs is expected. The role also requires operating a motor vehicle for departmental business and complying with all relevant policies and guidelines.

Requirements

  • Masters of Library Science Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid New Mexico drivers license with acceptable driving record for the past three years.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends.
  • Extensive working knowledge of reference resources, in both print and non-print formats.
  • Considerable knowledge of principles and practices common to modern library operations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills necessary to work effectively with students, volunteers, and part-time and full-time staff.
  • Ability to understand the technology used at the library, to conduct basic troubleshooting of technology-related issues, and to accurately report issues in a timely manner.
  • Broad practical experience with integrated library systems software and subscription databases.
  • Strong collection development skills required.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of office management, work organization and supervision.
  • Must have the ability to organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Time management skills sufficient to organize work.

  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel, and the general public.

  • Ability to accurately classify and catalog library materials, based upon a thorough knowledge of library collection, classification, and selection tools and techniques.
  • Ability to perform routine and complex duties as assigned with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to understand verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in work environment.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality, in accordance with library policies and laws.
  • Proficiency with tools, technology and equipment listed below.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, implements, and evaluates library programs to meet objectives and community needs.
  • Maintains and applies current knowledge of books, authors, and trends in library services and programs.
  • Provides general and in-depth reference assistance and reader advisory using various resources.
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of library collections (books, periodicals, online databases, media).
  • Responsible for budget requirements for collections as set by the Adult Services Coordinator.
  • Participates in the development of marketing materials for library programs, materials, and services.
  • Participates in the development of policies and standards for collection development and adult services operations.
  • Participates in professional organizations and activities to stay informed of trends in public libraries.
  • Plans and provides instruction and training to library staff and patrons, including outreach programs.
  • Analyzes and interprets data and reports related to department functions, making recommendations to the Adult Services Coordinator.
  • Interprets and enforces library policies and procedures to staff and the public.
  • May monitor the work of Adult Services staff for specific projects, such as evaluating the work performance of Library Associate and Reference Technicians.
  • May be asked to work on specific projects, including maintaining special collections, participating in the development of library web pages, maintaining the library's book groups, assisting with cataloging materials, managing interlibrary loan operations, and Government Documents collections.
  • May serve as a member of employee committees.
  • Represents the library on various community or professional bodies.
  • Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
  • Complies with Adult Services department and library procedures and policies, and the City's guidelines, rules, regulations, procedures, and policies.
