About The Position

Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island is seeking an Adult Education Instructor (ESL) to teach English to adult learners from diverse backgrounds. The organization strives to create a welcoming environment, empowering the vulnerable through wraparound services for over 100 years. Dorcas International offers a range of services including adult education, language learning, job training, employment services, citizenship and immigration services, refugee resettlement, and more. The Adult Education Instructor (ESL) will teach multi-level classes, plan lessons based on student needs, and maintain a conducive learning environment. The role involves supporting students with instruction and program services, monitoring attendance and academic progress, making routine operational decisions, meeting with a supervisor, and collaborating with program staff.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree
  • TESOL training or a comparable certification for teaching ESL classes is required
  • Subject matter expertise/experience in specific content areas
  • Ability to relate well to groups of students of differing abilities and backgrounds
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and through correct written grammar
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues individually and as a team
  • Ability to build a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the interests of students
  • Ability to engage learners with creative and stimulating instruction

Nice To Haves

  • At least two years of teaching experience with adult learners is preferred
  • Bilingual ability preferred

Responsibilities

  • Teach multi-level classes

  • Make routine decisions regarding the everyday operation of the classes
