This is a one-year position responsible for supporting programming designed to accompany our clients as they work towards their educational, economic, financial, and vocational goals. In this role, you will provide logistical support to our Newcomer Education Program. Newcomer Education centers around in-person, group services that offer skill-development, education, and community building opportunities. Programming is designed around expressed needs and is facilitated through intentional collaboration with community partners. The Newcomer Education team works to remove barriers to access often faced by clients, such as lack of transportation, language access, or childcare. Newcomer Education offers multiweek courses that builds English proficiency and skills necessary for workforce development such as digital literacy, navigating projects, etc., while also building community. Proposed activities will be supported, in part, with federal funds from the AmeriCorps State program sub-granted through the Commonwealth of Virginia, Virginia Department of Social Services. Activities are contingent upon funding availability and award from AmeriCorps.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must commit to one full term of service
  • Must be high school graduate, GED recipient, or working toward attaining a high school diploma / GED during their term of service
  • Must complete a National Service Criminal History check
  • Driver’s license and a reliable vehicle
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Confident when presenting in front of individuals and large groups
  • Proficiency working across different systems such as G-Suite, Office 365, Squarespace, volunteer database
  • Strong project management and event planning skills
  • Flexible and willing to learn new things
  • Ability to connect with others and forge strong relationships
  • Ability to work independently as well as on a team

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with running classes or group work
  • Sewing experience (for sewing class)
  • Teaching English classes to English language learners

Responsibilities

  • Provide registration and logistical support for in-person educational initiatives
  • Develop partnerships in the community that would provide support for educational programming
  • Ensure language access for programming
  • Communicate with program participants and volunteers
  • Weekly check-ins with program director
  • Opportunities for teaching if the applicant has expertise in topics such as sewing, job readiness or personal finance
