About The Position

The Adult Education Instructor is responsible for delivering the adult education and literacy component of the Road to Careers (R2C) Integrated Education and Training (IET) program. Instruction is provided through a strategic adjunct faculty partnership with the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) and is contextualized to the construction transportation field. Instruction focuses on applied reading, mathematics, and communication skills, including CDL logbook math, DOT regulatory literacy, construction schematics, Right-of-Way regulations, and work-zone safety signage. The instructor reports directly to the Program Coordinator/Lead Instructor at SMTCCAC and maintains adjunct faculty status through CSM in accordance with the partnership agreement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (Education, Adult education, English, Mathematics, or related field preferred)
  • Maryland Department of Labor-approved Adult Education Instructor certification required.
  • Minimum of 2 years teaching adult learners, GED, or workforce-based literacy/numeracy preferred.
  • Familiarity with National Reporting System (NRS) and approved assessments preferred.
  • Basic math and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other software applications for data retrieval, spreadsheet creation, and reporting.
  • Must always maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, appropriately, and professionally in both written and verbal formats with coworkers, supervisors, customers, and vendors.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required.
  • Valid Maryland Driver's License.
  • State and Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal Background Check.
  • National Sex Offender Public Registry Check.
  • Physical examination and Tuberculin PPD Tine Test at hire and annually.
  • Pre-employment, random, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing.
  • Current Certified Driver License.

Responsibilities

  • Create a safe, supportive adult learning environment.
  • Deliver contextualized instruction in applied reading (DOT regulations, Right-of-Way content), applied math (CDL logbook calculations, hours-of-service, distance/load math), construction schematics and work-zone signage interpretation, and digital literacy for online certifications.
  • Collaborate with Program Coordinator, Lead Instructor, and CDL staff.
  • Ensure integration of adult education, workforce preparation, and occupational training.
  • Administer NRS-approved assessments (pre- and post-testing).
  • Use data to individualize instructions.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, instructional hours, and assessment results.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by SMTCCAC-CSM partnership agreement.
