About The Position

The Whatcom Family YMCA is seeking Adult Basketball League Referees to join their team. This role is ideal for individuals with a strong knowledge of basketball and a passion for the game who can make tough calls, keep their cool under pressure, and create a fun, competitive atmosphere. The YMCA emphasizes teamwork, sportsmanship, healthy competition, and community building, and is looking for referees who can ensure games are fair, safe, and enjoyable for all participants.

Requirements

• Minimum age requirement of 18+.
• Solid understanding of basketball rules, gameplay, and officiating techniques.
• Confidence making quick, fair decisions in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
• A friendly, professional attitude with the ability to maintain authority on the court.
• Reliability, punctuality, and a commitment to creating a great experience for players and spectators.
• A passion for sports, teamwork, and the YMCA mission.
• Ability to move quickly, stay active for the duration of games, and maintain focus.
• Must be able to have clear, confident communication with players, coaches, and co-officials.
• Ability to manage disputes calmly and professionally and exhibit impartiality and fairness.
• Ability to interact with participants in a friendly and respectful manner.
• Must have availability: Wednesdays 5:30-7:30p & Sundays 10:00a – 2:00p.
• Have a strong Leadership presence and be confident under pressure.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Be Adaptable to working with various age groups and skill levels.

Nice To Haves

• Previous refereeing experience is a plus!
• Previous Officiating Experience, preferred.
• Must be CPR/First Aid Certification, or ability to obtain certification upon hire.

Responsibilities

• Officiate adult basketball league games, making fair and consistent calls while enforcing league rules.
• Maintain proper court positioning, manage game flow, and help create a positive playing experience.
• Encourage respectful competition and handle disagreements with confidence and professionalism.
• Accurately record final scores and game results.
• Assist with gym setup and cleanup before and after games.
• Recognize potential hazards, respond appropriately to concerns, and follow YMCA safety policies and procedures.
