About The Position

The Adoption Counselor is responsible for various aspects of animal care, client interaction, and administrative tasks within the Humane Society of North Texas. This role involves direct care of animals, assisting clients with adoptions, providing information to the public, maintaining records, and representing the organization professionally. The position requires a strong understanding of animal behavior and welfare, excellent customer service skills, and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment.

Requirements

  • Follow the mission of the Humane Society of North Texas.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Humane Society of North Texas adoption policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Humane Society of North Texas policies and protocols, such as, but not limited to, admitting, cleaning, and medical protocols.
  • Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior.
  • Ability to handle animals safely and with patience and gentleness.
  • Ability to represent the Humane Society of North Texas in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers, and staff.
  • Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the Humane Society of North Texas, with volunteers, the public, and be a team player.
  • Must be patient, courteous, and work well under stressful conditions.
  • Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information in paper and computerized format.
  • Must be detail-oriented and have strong time management skills.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures.
  • Ability to meet physical demands.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds without assistance, up to 80 pounds with assistance.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to focus.

Responsibilities

  • Care for, feed, monitor, medicate, and perform minor treatments on animals.
  • Report observed health or behavior issues to the Adoptions Supervisor/Assistant Manager.
  • Clean assigned areas on a daily basis.
  • Assist prospective clients in selecting animals for adoption and preparing adoption forms.
  • Provide information to the public about Humane Society of North Texas programs and promote good animal care and responsible pet ownership.
  • Advise new owners on pet examinations, adoption benefits, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide humane education to customers.
  • Maintain the database by entering accurate information on adopters and adoptable animals.
  • Collect and maintain accurate records of payments for adoptions, donations, and merchandise.
  • Check and clear voice messages, promptly answer and return phone calls, and document calls on the phone log.
  • Keep current inventory of necessary program supplies and report shortages to the Adoptions Supervisor/Assistant Manager.
  • Maintain assigned equipment, supplies, and vehicles in safe condition and report any problems or needed repairs to the Adoptions Supervisor/Assistant Manager.
  • Represent the Humane Society of North Texas by providing excellent customer service and focus.
  • Protect the confidential information of customers and donors.
  • Report to work at the assigned start time, go to/return from breaks and lunch at assigned times, and leave work at the assigned quitting time.
  • Perform additional tasks assigned by the Adoptions Supervisor/Assistant Manager.
  • Assist customers with adoptions.
  • Maintain accurate information and record keeping.
  • Monitor and care for animals within the organization.
  • Perform proper animal handling.
  • Maintain and watch over the adoption cash drawer.
  • Provide excellent customer service and focus.
