About The Position

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) / Infection Preventionist supports the Director of Nursing (DON) in overseeing clinical operations, ensuring high-quality resident care, regulatory compliance, and staff supervision. This role also serves as the facility’s Infection Preventionist, responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring the infection prevention and control program in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services guidelines, as well as Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requirements.

Requirements

  • Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Michigan
  • Infection Preventionist Certification (e.g., CIC)
  • BLS Certification
  • Minimum 2–3 years nursing experience in a skilled nursing or long-term care setting
  • Knowledge of long-term care regulations and survey process
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Strong understanding of infection control practices and outbreak management
  • Ability to analyze data and implement quality improvement initiatives
  • Leadership and team-building skills
  • Effective communication with staff, residents, families, and regulatory agencies
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced, 24/7 healthcare environment
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities

Nice To Haves

  • Previous leadership experience preferred (Charge Nurse, Unit Manager, ADON, etc.)
  • Infection Preventionist training or certification preferred (e.g., CDC/NFIP training)
  • IV Certification (preferred in LTC setting)

Responsibilities

  • Assist DON with daily clinical operations and nursing staff oversight (RNs, LPNs, CNAs)
  • Ensure compliance with federal regulations (F-Tags), state regulations, and facility policies
  • Participate in survey readiness and response (state and federal)
  • Assist with staffing, scheduling, and mandating processes as needed
  • Conduct rounds to ensure quality of care, safety, and customer service standards
  • Support hiring, onboarding, orientation, and staff education
  • Participate in disciplinary actions, coaching, and performance evaluations
  • Monitor clinical documentation for accuracy and compliance
  • Assist with QAPI initiatives, audits, and performance improvement plans
  • Serve as acting DON in the absence of the DON
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the facility Infection Prevention and Control Program (IPCP)
  • Conduct ongoing surveillance of infections (UTIs, respiratory, wound, outbreaks, etc.)
  • Track, trend, and report infection data to QAPI committee
  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration, CDC, and CMS infection control standards
  • Lead outbreak investigations and implement mitigation strategies
  • Educate staff on infection prevention practices (hand hygiene, PPE, isolation precautions)
  • Monitor proper use of PPE, including N95 and isolation protocols
  • Oversee immunization programs (influenza, COVID-19, etc.)
  • Ensure appropriate antibiotic stewardship practices
  • Maintain infection control logs, reports, and documentation for survey readiness
  • Collaborate with local health departments and report required communicable diseases
  • Ensure environmental cleaning and disinfection practices meet standards
