About The Position

The Memory Care Activity Assistant supports the development and delivery of specialized, person-centered activities for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. This role focuses on creating a structured, calm, and engaging environment that promotes dignity, comfort, and quality of life while reducing anxiety and behavioral challenges.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Experience working with dementia or memory care residents strongly preferred
  • SNF or long-term care experience preferred
  • Dementia care training or certification (such as through Alzheimer's Association programs)
  • Strong understanding of dementia behaviors and communication techniques
  • Calm, patient, and reassuring demeanor
  • Ability to redirect behaviors without confrontation
  • Creativity in adapting activities for varying cognitive levels
  • Excellent observation and communication skills
  • Team-oriented with strong compassion and empathy

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning and implementing dementia-friendly activities tailored to residents’ cognitive levels, interests, and abilities
  • Lead and support small group and one-on-one programming (e.g., sensory activities, music, reminiscence therapy, simple crafts, movement exercises)
  • Provide cueing, redirection, and reassurance to residents experiencing confusion or distress
  • Encourage participation while respecting residents’ preferences and limitations
  • Maintain a structured daily routine to promote familiarity and reduce anxiety
  • Observe and report changes in mood, behavior, or cognitive status to nursing and the interdisciplinary team
  • Assist with transporting residents safely to and from activities
  • Create and maintain a safe, calm, and therapeutic environment
  • Support family engagement and involvement in activities when appropriate
  • Document participation and responses per facility policy
  • Follow all infection control, safety, and dementia care best practices
