About The Position

Responsible for interviewing and registering surgical patients, verifying insurance, collecting required signatures and payments, and performing front desk duties including phones, data entry, and chart maintenance. Supports pre-op and waiting areas, assisting patients and families to ensure comfort and satisfaction while fostering teamwork, flexibility, and a positive patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Greets patients, families, and visitors promptly and courteously, responding to requests with confidence, compassion, and professionalism.

  • Maintains confidentiality, privacy, and data integrity in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
  • Answers telephones using proper etiquette, identifies department and self, and directs calls appropriately.
  • Acts as a liaison between patients, families, visitors, physicians, and staff, providing updates as needed while maintaining HIPAA compliance.
  • Completes accurate and timely patient registration, verifying identification, insurance, Coordination of Benefits (COB), and demographic information.
  • Confirms and documents insurance benefits, copays, and deductibles per established procedures.
  • Scans insurance cards, photo IDs, and supporting documentation into the electronic record; prepares and applies accurate patient ID bracelets.
  • Follows departmental and downtime procedures to ensure registration accuracy and compliance with all hospital policies.
  • Prepares and maintains patient charts, ensuring required forms and consents are accurate, complete, and properly labeled.
  • Accesses information systems to locate or complete missing documentation and obtains necessary patient signatures for treatment and financial responsibility.
  • Provides patients or representatives with information required by federal, state, and accreditation standards.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of billing, coding (ICD-10), and financial documentation as applicable to registration accuracy.
  • Maintains a registration error rate within acceptable standards and escalates insurance or reimbursement concerns appropriately.
  • Collects, assembles, and finalizes patient charts at the end of service, ensuring proper routing to Health Information Management (HIM).
  • Orders and maintains adequate levels of forms, office supplies, and materials while demonstrating cost-conscious resource use.
  • Performs data entry, documentation, and reporting tasks in assigned information systems; escalates system issues to IT/ISS when necessary.
  • Assists staff and leadership with departmental workflow, supporting patient throughput and communication between care teams.
  • Participates in continuous quality and performance improvement efforts, contributing to departmental and organizational goals.
  • Precepts and mentors new employees, promoting teamwork, professionalism, and cross-training to support staffing needs.
  • Attends required meetings, in-services, and professional development programs; maintains competency and participates in annual evaluation and goal-setting.
  • Completes assigned logs and checklists (e.g., equipment checks, supply inventories, temperature logs) to ensure compliance and safety.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and professional work environment that reflects the organization’s standards of excellence.
  • Assists with non-clinical support activities as directed, such as escorting patients, retrieving supplies, transporting items, or assisting with patient flow.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in Microsoft Office and applicable hospital information systems.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational needs.
