About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Reporting to the Fiscal Sergeant II, this position is responsible for processing, reviewing, and distributing all outgoing mail, packages, legal, certified, and courier mail.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of administrative experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented working knowledge of word processing or spreadsheet programs.

Responsibilities

  • Process a high volume of mail and interoffice correspondence daily
  • Maintain security of the facility by searching/reviewing all incoming mail for unauthorized items/contraband, and correspondence deemed a threat to the safety, security, and orderly function of the facility.
  • Review publications received for compliance with NCDAC policies to maintain safety and security.
  • Process and log all offender legal mail and facility certified mail.
  • Use postage meter to apply postage and determine cost of out-going mail/packages.
  • Deliver and pickup daily from the post office.
  • Pick up and deliver mail to assigned drop off points within the facility daily which will require a significant amount of walking even during inclement weather.
  • Enter money orders, cashier/certified checks received for offenders into offender bank accounts (trust fund accounts).
  • Respond to requests for information from staff, offenders and the general public both verbally and written.
  • Position has limited contact with offenders.
  • Requires lifting of mail crates and package up to 25 pounds.
