About The Position

The Administrative Assistant, Department of Linguistics, the College of Arts and Sciences – Georgetown University (a one-year renewable term position), provides a range of support functions for Distinguished University Professor Deborah Tannen, who is an internationally known author, speaker, and public intellectual in the fields of language, communication, and gender. This includes managing Dr. Tannen’s social media presence and website; answering, mostly by email but also by phone and regular mail, all inquiries, requests, and invitations to give interviews, answer questions, and speak at or attend events; tasks related to Dr. Tannen’s teaching; and other tasks as they arise.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma and 2-4 years of experience in a professional environment required (or equivalent combination of education and work experience).
  • A consummate professional with exemplary interpersonal skills, writes well, is detail-oriented, can manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision, and is happy to work independently.
  • Superior organizational skills and proven experience working independently.
  • Proven ability to work responsibly with highly confidential materials, as well as ability to balance and prioritize several assignments at one time.
  • Outstanding written/oral communication skills essential.
  • Good working knowledge of PC operation required.
  • Experience in the use of state-of-the-art software applications, including MS Word and Power Point.
  • Know or be willing to learn how to use Squarespace and other web-based platforms.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year institution.
  • Familiarity with academic and publishing environments is helpful.
  • Previous experience working in a university environment a plus.
  • Knowledge of Georgetown systems and locations a plus.
  • Experience in an office setting and interest in higher education highly desired.
  • Knowledge of Canvas highly desired.
  • Baseline knowledge of linguistics and academic research skills highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Aforementioned correspondence and inbox management
  • Assisting in preparation and maintenance of graduate and undergraduate courses
  • Processing requests for permission to reprint Dr. Tannen’s work
  • Arranging speaking engagements and travel
  • Research in relation to Dr. Tannen’s writing
  • Maintaining office files and organization
