About The Position

This position will primarily focus on administrative support for the project management officer and national political action officers implementing national campaigns on various topics. As assigned by the Director, and under the direction of the Administrative Assistant to the Director or an Assistant Director, the Administrative Assistant provides a full range of administrative support, such as preparation of documents, correspondence, travel and meeting arrangements, and expense claim processing, for units assigned to those negotiators.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of business and/or secretarial training, plus experience providing administrative support and/or secretarial duties in a union, legal, regulatory or similar environment.
  • An equivalent level of experience and education normally acquired through several years of experience in providing administrative or secretarial services relevant to the duties of the position.
  • Experience and familiarity with politics and parliamentary processes, including lobbying.
  • Knowledge of trade union role, objectives and activities, as well as an understanding of and commitment to union principles.
  • Good knowledge of the organization, functions and policies of the Public Service Alliance of Canada, in particular the collective bargaining process.
  • Some familiarity with the government, its practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic financial procedures.
  • Familiarity with basic graphic design functions, in order to properly format documents, slide decks and other materials.
  • Proficiency in the use of a personal computer, including the ability to use Windows, e-mail and the Internet.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Suites programs including spreadsheet, word processing, presentation, project management, email and communications platforms.
  • Ability to determine priorities and problem solve with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to learn new technologies, processes and regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others in a team environment.
  • Written and oral English and/or French communication skills (bilingual only when it has been identified as an operational requirement).
  • Proficiency in spelling, vocabulary and in the application and usage of French and English grammar
  • Ability to effectively type, transcribe and perform other word processing functions using Microsoft Word.
  • High degree of initiative, good judgment, good organizational skills and the ability to work under strict deadlines.
