About The Position

The Canadian Opera Company (COC) is seeking an energetic and responsible Administrative Assistant to provide administrative and artistic support for the COC’s Summer Music Camps. These camps offer children and youth entering grades 1 to 9 the opportunity to create their own opera over the course of one of four weeks in July. Participants explore all elements of an operatic production, including singing, composing, story creation, drama, movement, and stage design, culminating in a performance of their opera. The Assistant will work within the Community Partnerships & Programs Department and report to the Senior Manager, Community Partnerships & Programs. This is a six-week contract position running from June 24 to August 7, 2026.

Requirements

  • Post-Secondary student studying voice, instrumental music, theatre, arts education, and/or arts administration.
  • Background in the arts or relevant work/volunteer experience in the cultural sector.
  • Considerable experience working with, and leading, small and large groups of children and teenagers.
  • Proven ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with others.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Holds, or agrees to acquire, a valid Vulnerable Sector Verification through the Police Reference Check Program.
  • Emotional intelligence – ability to harness interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically and apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to tasks.
  • Demonstrate commitment to championing under-represented voices, and engage with diverse and BIPOC communities through culturally responsive programming.
  • Must be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the employment period.
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative support for the COC’s Summer Music Camps, including preparing documents and spreadsheets for scheduling and registration.
  • Oversee sign-in and sign-out procedures daily.
  • Communicate with parents and guardians via phone, email, and in person regarding inquiries and concerns.
  • Supervise children during lunch hours.
  • Develop feedback forms, and process and analyze feedback.
  • Organize and maintain supplies.
  • Photocopy documents.
  • Assist with marketing initiatives.
  • Attend meetings.
  • Contribute to the writing of a program report detailing information about the COC’s Summer Music Camps upon completion.
  • Assist with social media activity related to the camps on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
  • Provide artistic support for the COC’s Summer Music Camps, including helping to establish a safe and welcoming environment for children and youth.
  • Lead activities and games.
  • Assist with set up and clean up.
  • Actively engage in all programming activities such as drama, movement, stage design, singing, libretto-writing, and composing.
  • Encourage participants to stay on task.
  • Supervise children during lunch and extended care.
  • Contribute to leading rehearsals and activities as needed.
