This position is responsible for maintaining the integrity, security, and accountability of property and evidence associated with criminal investigations and court proceedings. The successful candidate will be able to work independently with little or no supervision and demonstrate strong organizational skills, attention to detail, professionalism, and discretion in handling sensitive and potentially hazardous materials. Under general supervision, the incumbent will receive, identify, classify, process, store, safeguard, oversee delivery of, release, and dispose of all types of property and evidence; including weapons, vehicles, narcotics, money, hazardous materials, body parts, and bodily fluids. Responsibilities include ensuring incoming property is properly documented and packaged; issuing receipts for property received; tracking the movement of all property and evidence; and maintaining accurate chain-of-custody documentation throughout the lifecycle of each item. The position also oversees the transport of property and evidence to crime laboratories for specialized testing, to courts for hearings and trials, and to storage facilities as needed. The incumbent will return evidence to its original or updated storage location upon return, conduct self-audits, and assist with audits and inventories to ensure compliance with department procedures and state law. Additional responsibilities include coordinating the release, sale, destruction, and disposal of property and evidence in accordance with legal and departmental requirements; facilitating communication with rightful property owners regarding the lawful release of property; maintaining records through a computerized property and evidence control system; communicating with the general public, the District Attorney’s Office, and crime laboratories; and testifying in court when required.
