About The Position

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire an Administrative Procedures Specialist in our Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division at State Police Headquarters in North Chesterfield, Virginia. The job duties for this position include but are not limited to: Supporting the commitment of VSP as a Point of Contact (POC) to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) by enhancing outreach activities that improve the accessibility of the instant check program for firearm dealers and the gun buying population. Providing training and instructional information to assist, monitor, and enforce firearm dealer compliance with NICS requirements and Virginia firearm laws.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of state and federal criminal history databases.
  • Skills in using Microsoft Office applications to include Word, Excel, Exchange/Outlook.
  • Skills in basic computer operations.
  • Skills in interpersonal communication.
  • Ability to read, speak and write in English.
  • Ability to read and interpret policies and procedures and provide clarification.
  • Ability to access, retrieve, and interpret state and federal automated records.
  • Ability to apply research and analytical methodology in the interpretation of criminal arrest and disposition information.
  • Ability to travel, occasionally overnight.
  • Must be eligible to become Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certified which requires either United States citizenship or lawful permanent resident of the United States and eligible for naturalization.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required or ability to obtain prior to hiring.
  • Good driving record required.
  • Must be willing to work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) preferred.
  • Direct experience associated with Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in retrieval and interpretation of criminal arrest and disposition information preferred.

Responsibilities
