About The Position

This position involves teaching Music 280R: Intro to Popular Music History, an evening class offered through the School of Music. The course is designed as an accessible introduction to popular music as a cultural, historical, and musical phenomenon, open to students from all disciplines with no prior musical training. The instructor will be responsible for preparing and utilizing high-quality course materials, managing the course on BYU's Learning Suite or Canvas, and maintaining accessibility for students. The role also requires regular communication with the Division Coordinator and a commitment to the university's mission.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required (completed by start date)
  • Significant professional/industry experience
  • Evidence of strong teaching ability or potential
  • Must relocate and/or reside in Utah for the duration of employment
  • If a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: must hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend.
  • Must abide by the university's Honor Code and Dress & Grooming Standards.
  • Successful candidates are expected to support and contribute to the academic and religious missions of the university within the context of the principles and doctrines of the affiliated church.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Music 280R: Intro to Popular Music History
  • Prepare and employ high-quality course materials, including syllabi, lesson plans, assessments, lectures, and activities that align with the School of Music’s learning outcomes for the course
  • Utilize BYU’s Learning Suite or Canvas to manage assignments, post grades, and communicate with students
  • Remain accessible to students for questions and assistance as needed outside of regular class time
  • Respond to student inquiries in a timely manner
  • Frequent communication with the Division Coordinator providing updates
  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
