About The Position

Founded in 1854, Hamline University is seeking a candidate passionate about vocal music and directing a choir. The ideal candidate will value diversity of repertoire and audience, utilize creative and inclusive pedagogical approaches, and actively accommodate student needs and interests. This adjunct professor position involves directing the A Cappella Choir, managing administrative responsibilities, and contributing to the musical education mission of the university. The role reports to the Director of Music Program and the Chair of the Arts Division and requires collaboration with the music department faculty and student leaders. The contract is for one academic year, renewable, with no responsibilities during winter break or summer months. Optional private vocal studio teaching is available for additional income.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Arts from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience as a Choir Director.
  • Experience conducting.
  • Singing capability.
  • Piano accompanying capability.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in music or DMA/Ph.D from an accredited college or university.
  • 10 plus years’ experience as a Choir Director.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting all rehearsals and concerts for the A Cappella Choir.
  • Managing administrative responsibilities that support the musical education mission.
  • Directing weekly rehearsals on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Overseeing sectionals with student leaders on Wednesdays.
  • Planning and executing concerts, including Fall Semester Parent/Family Concert, Winter (Christmas Concert), and Spring Concert.
  • Organizing community service performances (off-campus run-outs).
  • Participating in Homecoming/Alumni church service.
  • Organizing a Spring or Fall weekend retreat or other bonding event.
  • Maintaining consistent communication with Full-time Faculty and Vocal Instructor(s).
  • Maintaining the A Cappella Choir's relationship with alumni and Institutional Development.
  • Collaborating with choir student leadership, Music Program Director, and Division Chair to manage budgets, fundraising, and calendar.
  • Participating in Vocal Auditions at the start of Fall term.
  • Selecting students to receive the Holliday Scholarship.
  • Optional: Private vocal studio teaching for additional income.
