About The Position

Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) is a Christian liberal arts university in the evangelical, Wesleyan tradition, offering quality undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. The Department of Art and Design is seeking candidates for an adjunct teaching position. The university is looking for an individual capable of excellent teaching, with responsibilities beginning as early as August 2026. This role will involve teaching a wide variety of courses in Art and Design, including general education and service courses. Course subjects may include Art Education, Graphic Design, and/or Visual Arts. The position also requires working strategically with diverse colleagues, students, parents, and community members, engaging in personal scholarship and scholarship with students, advising students academically, spiritually, and socially, participating in departmental activities and governance, serving on university faculty committees, and contributing to preparing students for their post-graduate careers and self-discovery.

Requirements

  • Graduate degree or professional qualifications in the Art and Design field.
  • Evidence of a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching.
  • A minimum of one year of higher education teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching students from diverse backgrounds preferred.
  • Thorough commitment to the concept of Christian liberal arts education and a desire to work in a Christian university.
  • Supportive of the religious and educational goals of the university and its sponsoring denomination.
  • Evidence of Christian commitment and active church involvement.
  • Agree to live in agreement with PLNU’s Community Life Covenant.
  • Successful completion of a background check.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction in the area of Art and Design including some general education and service courses.
  • Course subjects may include the following: Art Education, Graphic Design, and/or Visual Arts.
  • Work strategically with diverse colleagues, students, parents and community members.
  • Engage in personal scholarship and scholarship with students (where possible).
  • Advise students academically, spiritually, and socially.
  • Participate in departmental activities and governance (as requested).
  • Serve on university faculty committees/working groups and perform other normal faculty duties (as requested).
  • Contribute in preparing students for their post graduate career and finding who they are called to be.

Benefits

  • PLNU adjunct pay: Using a 3-unit full semester appointment as a pay guide, the adjunct pay range is $5,013 - $6,684. The units will determine the actual salary.
