About The Position

Sullivan University is seeking an adjunct attorney to serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to build a new estate planning and administration asynchronous course in the Paralegal Studies Program. The candidate will also have the opportunity to serve as an adjunct online instructor for the new course once it is complete. This course will be a required component for paralegal students in the associate, bachelor, and post-baccalaureate programs. Adjunct faculty members are student-centered teaching mentors who report to their respective Dean, with a potential dotted line to a Department/Program Director or General Education Chair. The primary role involves developing relevant content, assignments, and assessments for a new legal specialty course, with the assistance of an instructional designer. The faculty member will create content that fosters student learning, deliver effective and career-relevant instruction, and provide a conducive learning environment. Collaboration with the Dean of Legal Studies is expected for course map development and revision, as well as the selection and revision of course materials.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and JD preferred.
  • Previous legal practice experience in trusts and estates law.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent leadership, customer service, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously and efficiently while meeting required deadlines.
  • Ability to function efficiently in a stressful work environment.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, to include evenings, weekends, and travel to multiple locations as dictated by the course schedule.
  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time, as well as to move about the campus.
  • Must be able to hear and speak well enough to communicate with students, faculty, and staff face to face, via the telephone, and through electronic medium (e.g., email, recordings, virtual meetings, etc.).
  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior course-building and/or teaching undergrad asynchronous courses preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate student learning within face-to-face, online, hybrid, and/or HyFlex learning environments.
  • Deliver effective and career-relevant instruction.
  • Provide an environment conducive to learning.
  • Evaluate student learning for all assigned classes.
  • Respond to student inquiries and grade assignments in a timely manner.
  • Engage students using various instructional techniques such as collaborative learning, experiential learning, and problem-based learning.
  • Deliver course curriculum utilizing the University’s learning management system.
  • Participate in course and program level learning assessments, including defining student learning outcomes, choosing and administering measures, evaluating student performance, and suggesting improvements.
  • Work with the Dean, Department Chair, and/or Program Director in the development and revision of course maps and review/participate in the selection and revision of course materials.
  • Schedule, supervise, debrief, and evaluate students in clinical, externship, observation, field experience, and similar settings as appropriate.
  • Participate in student retention efforts by reaching out to students with excessive absences, documenting retention activities, and informing students about University services.
  • Communicate availability (e.g., office hours) to all students via email, phone, or other personal contact.
  • Attend graduation (encouraged).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
