About The Position

Heidelberg University is seeking to hire an Adjunct Instructor of the Heidelberg University Marching Band for a one-semester adjunct faculty position that includes directing the Marching Band and Symphonic Band and potentially teaching a course in marching band techniques. The Adjunct Instructor of the Heidelberg University Marching Band is a dynamic teacher with a strong background in bands and instrumental music education. This position will report directly to the Director of the School of Music and Theatre.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's in Music Education is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of secondary school teaching experience, including both marching band and symphonic band programming.
  • The ability to lead and develop a collegiate band program, and excellent classroom teaching skills are crucial.
  • Demonstrated experience in wind band conducting with broad knowledge of repertoire.
  • Recruiting ability is a primary requirement.
  • Proven success in building an instrumental program at the secondary level is required.
  • The ability to collaborate with faculty, ensembles and programs within the School of Music and Theatre.
  • Support and service to the School of Music and Theatre and to broad University constituencies is expected.
  • The ability to act as a representative for the School of Music and Theatre and Heidelberg University.
  • Outstanding oral communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, collaborating with colleagues and student workers.
  • Ability to travel and work weekends as needed according to SMT programming and recruitment endeavors.

Nice To Haves

  • A MM, DMA, or PhD in Music Education is preferred.
  • 5 years teaching experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct the Marching (during football season) and Symphonic Bands (after football season concludes).
  • Teach potential course in Marching Band Techniques.
  • Provide programming service to the SMT and larger Heidelberg Community.
  • Model leadership values of integrity, honesty, respectfulness, diversity, and accountability in all interactions and activities.
  • Utilize pedagogy that matches best practice in the discipline; challenging students with content and practices that emphasizes critical thinking and engagement/application.
  • Collaborate with other School of Music and Theatre faculty, assisting with curricular, programmatic and engagement endeavors.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to teamwork and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Bring a spirit of enthusiasm and energy to the campus, inspiring students and colleagues.
