About The Position

The Adjunct Instructor of Criminal Justice is a part-time position reporting to the Department Head of Social Work, Sociology, Justice Studies (SWSJS). This role involves teaching college-level students in traditional and/or non-traditional settings, both on and off-campus, during weekdays, weeknights, and Saturdays. Work is dependent on enrollment needs each semester. In addition to teaching, part-time faculty are expected to provide student assistance and advice in their subject area and may be required to participate in student orientation sessions.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in criminal justice field from an accredited institution of higher learning or a related discipline for non-practice courses.
  • Demonstrated success teaching at the college level.
  • Able to teach in person or virtually as program needs dictate.
  • Recent experience in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge and experience in using instructional technology.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or PhD in criminal justice or related field from an accredited institution of higher learning or a related discipline.
  • Candidates with teaching experience and expertise in an additional area also offered in the assigned department are highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively teaches college-level students, demonstrating commitment to the University's mission and goals.
  • Actively engages in planning, developing, and improving curriculum offerings.
  • Directs instructional activities that encourage students to improve critical thinking and problem-solving skills, enhance self-image, and clarify values.
  • Provides students with a course syllabus conforming to university-approved requirements on the first day of class.
  • Teaches courses in accordance with the course syllabus, informing students of objectives, requirements, grading system, attendance policy, academic integrity, and suggested readings.
  • Holds classes as scheduled, including those before and after holidays, and obtains pre-approval for rescheduling or cancellation.
  • Promptly notifies the Department Head or Dean when unable to hold class due to illness, conferences, or emergencies, and arranges for instruction during absence.
  • Provides opportunities for students to discuss, demonstrate, present, and explain ideas, information, processes, and techniques relevant to the subject matter.
  • Utilizes a variety of teaching strategies, including appropriate instructional technology.
  • Encourages students to use relevant available resources to enhance their scholarship.
  • Prepares for each class and conducts it to ensure students master learning objectives at the upper end of Bloom's taxonomy (analysis, synthesis, evaluation).
  • Presents teaching materials in a respectful, understandable, and effective manner.
  • Uses related testing measurements that accurately reflect stated course objectives.
  • Grades and returns student assignments within ten working days.
  • Administers academic policies equitably for all students.
  • Ensures coursework requires students to analyze, explore, question, reconsider, and synthesize knowledge and skills; relates to currently accepted practices; and requires research and engagement with diverse views.
  • Manages the classroom environment professionally to promote maximum learning.
  • Ensures adherence to University policies on classroom behavior and etiquette.
  • Provides counsel to students with disruptive behavior outside of class and reports persistent issues to the Department Head.
  • Contacts appropriate emergency responders in threatening classroom situations.
  • Upholds academic integrity.
  • Identifies and initiates corrective action for classroom safety hazards, including posting Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Develops, maintains, and submits accurate, timely, and complete records, forms, reports, and requests.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date student records for attendance, assignments, and grades.
  • Takes class attendance each time a class meets and maintains accurate records.
  • Furnishes requested information promptly to the Department Head or administration.
  • Files enrollment reports as requested.
  • Submits final grades via the web within 48 hours of the final exam.
  • Files final evaluation reports within 48 hours after the final examination.
  • Submits end-of-semester course notebooks for each class taught by the deadline.
  • Submits an analysis of student learning outcomes to the Program Coordinator for each course taught.
  • Submits proposed undergraduate curricular changes to the Department Head.
  • Submits textbook orders by applicable deadlines, if required.
  • Completes the required check-out process with the Department Head at the end of the academic year.
  • Ensures all University-issued property, equipment, and materials are returned on time and in good order.
  • Obtains pre-approval from the Department Head before inviting guest speakers.
  • Promptly reports any emergency to the academic Department Head.
  • Maintains effective collegial communication, professional interaction, and functional relations within the department, college, and off-campus sites.
  • Works to ensure positive relations are maintained.
  • Effectively resolves inter-personal and transactional issues and concerns.
  • Ensures effective and appropriate communication and dissemination of information.
  • Consistently exhibits sound judgment in exercising responsibilities.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge and compliance with all University policies and procedures.
  • Complies with the Faculty Handbook and Employment Handbook policies.
  • Demonstrates professional conduct at all University-related events.
  • Refrains from behavior that disrupts business operations, brings disrepute to the University, or reflects unfavorably upon its reputation or standards.
  • Follows established policies and procedures, including those related to harassment, intellectual property, equal opportunity, conflicts of interest, nepotism, and outside employment.
  • Ensures the confidentiality of personal information related to students and personnel.
  • Follows and ensures compliance with external regulatory institutions and organizations.
  • Follows established financial guidelines, including travel and purchasing.
  • Ensures efficient allocation and economical utilization of university resources.
  • Actively pursues scholarly activities and development to remain current in the teaching field.
  • Improves professional competence and performance through scholarly activities and self-development (e.g., workshops, conferences, research, writing, publishing, consulting, grants).
  • Participates in University professional development activities and systems training.
  • Maintains up-to-date computer technology skills, including Moodle, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other applicable Jenzabar modules or software programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
