About The Position

UMGC is hiring an Adjunct Faculty member in Writing and Speech to teach on-site at Camp Fuji, Japan. This role is for local applicants only; UMGC does not provide logistical support, and applicants must have and maintain their own legal status in the country where they teach. Candidates must be able to travel reliably to assigned locations, some of which may not be accessible by public transportation, and perform required on-site responsibilities. Adjunct faculty teach using UMGC’s standardized, pre-designed curriculum, with rubrics, open educational resources, library resources, and digital textbooks provided. The role centers on mentoring adult learners, facilitating instruction, providing feedback, and drawing on relevant professional expertise and real-world examples. Courses may be face-to-face, online (asynchronous and/or synchronous), hybrid, or live-streamed, depending on location and program. Most courses run in accelerated eight-week sessions, and the position requires substantial engagement throughout each term to support students’ academic, social, personal, and professional growth. Newly hired faculty receive online orientation and ongoing professional development. The stated hiring range is $903–$1,173 per credit hour for non-PhD faculty and $931–$1,215 per credit hour for PhD faculty, depending on step. Adjunct benefits may include access to health coverage, term life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and supplemental retirement plans. Adjuncts are eligible only for State of Maryland benefits, are not eligible for subsidized rates, and are responsible for the full cost if enrolled.
