About The Position

University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) seeks adjunct faculty to teach on-site at Shady Grove, MD, for the Humanities program. Specifically, we are seeking faculty for the following course(s): Introduction to Philosophy (PHIL 100), Introduction to Moral Philosophy and Ethical Reasoning (PHIL 140), Contemporary Social Justice Issues (PHIL 304), Technology and Culture (HUMN 344), and Myth in the World (HUMN 351). UMGC is a mission-driven institution committed to adult learners, with a global presence and a strong connection to the U.S. military. The adjunct faculty role emphasizes being a scholar-practitioner, actively engaging students, guiding them in applying their learning, providing constructive feedback, and demonstrating current subject-matter expertise. Faculty are also expected to provide feedback on curricular improvements. New faculty must complete a two-week online orientation, FacDev 411.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Philosophy, Humanities, or related field from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Professional experience in ethics teaching or a related field.
  • Experience teaching adult learners online in higher education is highly preferred.
  • This position is specifically to teach onsite at Shady Grove, MD.

Responsibilities

  • Teach on-site at Shady Grove, MD, for the Humanities program.
  • Actively engage students through frequent interaction that motivates them to succeed, and conveys a genuine energy and enthusiasm for their learning.
  • Guide students in active collaboration and the application of their learning in problem- and project-based learning demonstrations.
  • Provide rich and regular constructive feedback, utilizing rubrics effectively for the assessment of student work, and acknowledging student accomplishments.
  • Demonstrate relevant and current subject-matter expertise, and help students connect concepts across their academic program.
  • Provide feedback to your program chair on possible curricular improvements.
