Lesley University’s Department of Art & Design is seeking a highly qualified adjunct instructor to teach: IDESN 3250 - Type & Letterpress; Fall Semester 2026; Thursdays 5:30-9:15pm; In-Person, On-Campus. This course develops students’ ability to work with large amounts of text to refine the art of “setting” type, while respecting both content and page structure. Through hands-on experience in the LUCAD shop, students are introduced to the materials and manual techniques of the letterpress process as a foundation for typographic design. They are encouraged to explore the creative possibilities that emerge from working within the constraints of specific tools and materials, and to understand how these limitations have historically shaped the visual language of design. The course balances studio-based practice with critical examination and discussion of historical typographic works, fostering more sophisticated typographic sensibilities while reinforcing an understanding of the architectural nature of type that continues to inform contemporary digital design.
