About The Position

Holyoke Community College is seeking applications for an Adjunct Faculty position to teach LAX 110: Introduction to Latinx Studies in Fall 2026. This course offers an interdisciplinary exploration of major Latinx communities in the United States, including predominant groups like Mexican Americans and Puerto Ricans, as well as experiences of those with ties to Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Students will critically examine a wide range of materials, including visual art, literature, film, historical texts, and sociological studies, to build a foundational understanding from interdisciplinary viewpoints. The course will analyze colonialism in the Americas in relation to contemporary artistic representations, social identities, cultural practices, structural inequalities, and immigration patterns. Adjunct faculty are responsible for providing a quality learning experience, reporting to a dean, and facilitating student learning. This includes distributing and reviewing the course syllabus, utilizing active learning methods, staying current in their professional content area, arranging for necessary materials and equipment, and accurately recording and reporting student data. Adjunct faculty are also expected to be supportive of students' learning goals, make provisions for individual differences, maintain academic integrity, and be available to assist students. They should also be aware of and recommend campus services such as library services, financial aid, and counseling. Adjunct faculty are expected to attend all scheduled classes and follow procedures for notifying supervisors and providing alternate assignments if a class must be missed.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Latinx Studies or related area
  • Firm grounding in the subject matter of the course being offered
  • Experience using an online learning management system to support classroom instruction (Canvas preferred)
  • Commitment to and demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff & student body
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States

Responsibilities

  • Provide a quality learning experience for students on a semester basis.
  • Perform instruction-related duties and responsibilities in a timely manner and in accordance with the mission, policies and procedures of the college.
  • Distribute and review the course syllabus during the first class meeting.
  • Forward a course syllabus to the dean no later than the end of the first week of classes.
  • Utilize active learning methods and a variety of instructional strategies designed to assist the learner in meeting the objectives of the course.
  • Remain abreast of ongoing developments and practices in his/her professional content area(s).
  • Arrange for the acquisition and preparation of appropriate materials and equipment in a timely manner necessary to meet course objectives in collaboration with the area dean.
  • Be prompt and accurate in the recording and reporting of student data including assessment of student performance; including final grade reports.
  • Be supportive of students' learning goals by focusing on student learning outcomes, taking into account the needs and abilities of the students, becoming familiar with academic and social support, making reasonable provisions to accommodate individual differences, maintaining the academic integrity of the college, and making himself/herself available to assist students in achieving their learning goals.
  • Recommend campus services to students as needed.
  • Attend all scheduled classes.
  • Follow appropriate procedures by notifying the supervisor or the supervisor's designee and is responsible by providing an alternate assignment if it is necessary to miss a class.
