About The Position

Holyoke Community College is seeking adjunct faculty to teach COM 121: Introduction to Communication in Fall 2026. This course explores human communication through various approaches, concepts, and theories, focusing on verbal and nonverbal communication, written, spoken, visual, and mediated symbols. Students will learn to develop messages for specific audiences and contexts, explore symbolic representations and their impact on social realities, investigate group dynamics, and examine the influence of media in US society. Adjunct faculty are responsible for providing a quality learning experience, distributing and reviewing the course syllabus, utilizing active learning methods and diverse instructional strategies, staying current in their professional content area, arranging for necessary materials and equipment, and accurately recording and reporting student data. They are also expected to be supportive of students' learning goals, familiar with campus support services, and attend all scheduled classes, following procedures for any necessary absences.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Communication or related area
  • Firm grounding in the subject matter of the course being offered
  • Experience using an online learning management system to support classroom instruction (Canvas preferred)
  • Commitment to and demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff & student body
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States

Responsibilities

  • Provides a quality learning experience for Holyoke Community College students on a semester basis.
  • Reports to a dean and performs instruction-related duties and responsibilities in a timely manner and in accordance with the mission, policies and procedures of the college.
  • Distributes and reviews the course syllabus during the first class meeting.
  • Forwards a course syllabus to the dean no later than the end of the first week of classes.
  • Utilizes active learning methods and a variety of instructional strategies designed to assist the learner in meeting the objectives of the course.
  • Remains abreast of ongoing developments and practices in his/her professional content area(s).
  • Arranges for the acquisition and preparation of appropriate materials and equipment in a timely manner necessary to meet course objectives in collaboration with the area dean.
  • Is prompt and accurate in the recording and reporting of student data including assessment of student performance; including final grade reports.
  • Is supportive of students' learning goals by focusing on student learning outcomes, taking into account the needs and abilities of the students, becoming familiar with academic and social support, making reasonable provisions to accommodate individual differences, maintaining the academic integrity of the college, and making himself/herself available to assist students in achieving their learning goals.
  • Recommends campus services to students as needed.
  • Attends all scheduled classes.
  • Follows appropriate procedures by notifying the supervisor or the supervisor's designee and is responsible by providing an alternate assignment if it is necessary to miss a class.
