About The Position

Under the direction of the Nursing Department Chair and supervision of the Community Health Nursing Course Coordinator, the Clinical Instructor for Community Health (adjunct position) provides supervision of and direction to pre-licensure nursing students at the community clinical site. Sites include the local public health department, community services provided by the local health system and other community organizations. Essential Duties include the following. Other duties may be as assigned.

Requirements

  • Active license as an R. N. in the State of Maryland
  • At least two years of clinical experience
  • Hold at minimum a BSN
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience in community/public health nursing content area
  • Excellent skills in knowledge of nursing care and community/public health and be able to relate these aspects to problem solving/critical thinking skill development in the student.
  • Possess leadership qualities, be organized, able to deal appropriately with delicate situations, and able to effectively communicate and negotiate resolutions with faculty, students, and clinical site staff regarding problems in the community clinical setting.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with partners across campus in support of Hood College’s mission as a student-centered, liberal arts institution.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from both external and internal customers both in person and by phone.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Proficient with statistical and financial concepts.
  • Ability to apply statistical and financial concepts to tracking, projections, goal setting, and interpreting reports.
  • Must be able to draw conclusions from reports and make cost effective decisions regarding programs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a number of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a group in developing and executing project plans.
  • Ability to work in the theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Directs, manages and evaluates student learning in an approved clinical setting, adhering to the policies of the clinical setting and the College.
  • Assists the student in integration of theory and practice, specific to the course’s learning activities and level of the learner.
  • Evaluates the student’s development of clinical reasoning skills.
  • Meets with students at midterm for formal evaluation and again at the end of the course as to progress and performance.
  • Provide clinical, skills lab, and classroom instruction as appropriate.
  • Available at all times the student is in the clinical setting.
  • Directly observes and guides students’ learning activities with clients.
  • Evaluates students in clinical as related to the nursing program outcomes.
  • Provides feedback to the lead teacher (or to clinical faculty coordinator) regarding the clinical setting’s effectiveness in supporting student accomplishment of the course and program outcomes.
  • Maintains the professional practice knowledge base needed to instruct learners in contemporary nursing practice.
  • Participates as a member of the course team in the course’s development and evaluation activities with the lead faculty.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, both formally and informally with didactic and clinical faculty members.
  • Provides timely and ongoing feedback to the lead faculty regarding individual student and group performance in accomplishment of the course’s outcomes.
  • Provides feedback to the lead faculty (or to clinical faculty coordinator) regarding the clinical setting’s effectiveness in supporting student accomplishment of the course and program outcomes.
  • Collaborates with the unit manager and staff so that the presence of students and their activities are supportive of the unit’s goals and needs.
  • Serves as a liaison between the clinical agency and school of nursing.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned or required.
