About The Position

The Adaptive Technology Specialist, in conjunction with and under the direction of the Manager, Equitable Learning is responsible for the delivery of appropriate assistive educational technology training and learning strategies support to give students with disabilities the tools they need to enhance learning. The incumbent will provide students with disabilities the adaptive technology (hardware and software) and learning strategies to support academic success and maximize learning opportunities in their program of study. The incumbent will train, advise, and support students with identified learning challenges in the use of assistive devices and software platforms. The incumbent will provide on-site support of Assistive Technology software to support student access in the Mohawk Testing Centre, Accessible Learning Lab including the training of invigilators on use of AT and development of user guides. The incumbent records student appointments, inter-departmental database for inclusion in Ministry reports.

Requirements

• 4-year degree or equivalent in related fields of education on disability studies, such as Psychology, Educational Psychology, or Special Education.
• 3 years of experience training in the use of assistive devices, software, and platforms in the context of academic studies.
• Experience working with adults with disabilities.
• Familiarity with UDL (Universal Design for Learning).
• Experience working with AODA, Ontario Human Rights Commission guidelines.
• Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
• The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.

Responsibilities

• Conducts adaptive technology intake and assessment. Makes recommendations to student around appropriate adaptive technology.
• Trains students on the use of adaptive technology programs and platforms including Kurzweil 3000 (text to speech), TextHelp Read and Write Gold, Dragon Naturally Speaking, WordQ, and organizational software such as Inspiration.
• Researches new and emerging adaptive technology programs and devices and creates appropriate resources to support training using initiative and creativity.
• Conducts research on adaptive technology training effectiveness, outcomes, and engagement at Mohawk College.
• Arranges and facilitates adaptive technology demonstrations to students, staff, faculty and the college community to enhance awareness of the availability and role of assistive technologies for students with disabilities.
• Reviews journals/websites to keep up to date on the newest available technology for use by students with disabilities. Ensure technical resources are developed in clear and concise language.
• Consults with ALS Technician and Manager to identify new hardware and software for the benefit of students with disabilities.
• Develops programming for new software and hardware and technology, develops theory of change, implements program, measures outcomes and makes adjustments as necessary.
• Communicates with adaptive technology vendors, distributors, and developers as needed.
• Provides on-site troubleshooting of Assistive Technology software and hardware to support student access in the Mohawk Testing Centre, Accessible Learning Lab including the training of invigilators on use of adaptive technology and development of user guides for students and Mohawk Testing Centre staff.
• Provides back-up support with Alternate Format test conversion to the Mohawk Testing Centre
• Records appointment case notes in Accommodate database
• Tracks, records and organizes data around technology usage, engagement, and appointment indicators associated with engagement and success.
• Attends and participates in regular college-wide and departmental meetings.
• Conducts Learning Strategies intake and assessment. Makes recommendations to student about appropriate learning strategies.
• Works with students to train and advise them in the effective application of learning, and study strategies for their individual learning styles.
• Conducts research on effectiveness of learning strategies and stays current on literature about outcomes and learning strategies evaluation.
• Assists students in understanding the impact of their disability and how it affects their ability to learn.
• Assists students in understanding their needs and strengths and helps them to communicate this information to faculty. Supports students in developing and applying effective advocacy strategies and skills for success in the college.
• Conducts research and records the effectiveness of strategies for students with specific learning disabilities.
• Reviews the student's file to understand student's strengths and challenges with respect to program and college requirements.
• Records appointment case notes in Accommodate database.
• Provides faculty outreach around adaptive technology related accommodations to reduce systemic barriers for students with disabilities.
• Provides consultation to program areas around specific student learning challenges and provides in-service training (Language Studies, LSC, Career Pathways, International).
• Provides outreach to faculty and students in specific programs regarding adaptive technology and learning strategies by providing presentations to students and faculty (Language Studies, Career Pathways, International, LSC).
• Develops transition programming for ALS to support students with specific disabilities. Implements, monitors and measures program effectiveness and outcomes.
• Works in partnership with ALS staff and faculty & marketing, to develop outreach materials to promote adaptive technology and learning strategies services on campus.
• Coordinates outreach to faculty regarding accommodations and presents “Let’s Talk Academic Accommodations” to different faculty and service areas
• Provides mentorship to adaptive technology and learning strategies professionals at college and from community at request of Manager.
• Presents at conferences and collaborates with other post-secondary institutions on the agenda of ATLS effectiveness, engagement and promotion.
• Other duties as assigned.
