About The Position

Join a multifaceted team that covers trauma and acute care surgery, as well as urology, plastics, and vascular thoracic surgery as needed. The Advanced Practice Practitioner’s (APP) primary role will cover the Acute Care Emergency Surgery (ACES) 11-hour shifts. The APP will be trained to cover all aspects of the ACES team and help ensure full coverage of the ACES clinical schedule. The APP will have the opportunity to train and may provide cross coverage to other APP service lines within the same specialty separate from your Required Shifts, as defined in Schedule 2 (“Cross-Coverage Shifts”). Perform routine and expanded job descriptions as listed in the provider's collaboration agreement on file with the Maryland Board of Physicians or Maryland Board of Nursing. In collaboration with the physician care team, the APP will provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health care services to critically ill patients. Obtain medical histories, examine patients, daily rounds, orders and interprets tests, makes initial diagnoses, and orders treatments. Communicate effectively with attending physicians, other medical teams, team members, and patients and their families. Administer therapeutic procedures and advanced procedures as noted in the Delineation of Privileges, such as central lines, chest tubes, etc. Instruct and counsel patients and families. First assist in the operating room.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and graduation from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program are required, along with mandatory certification by the NCCPA and registration with the Maryland State Board of Medical Examiners, OR current certification to practice as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Must participate in appropriate continuing medical education programs.
  • Credentialing must be obtained from University of Maryland Capital Region Health’s Medical Staff Office
  • Maintenance of BLS and ACLS certification is required.
  • ATLS is required and can be obtained after your start date.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of surgical, emergency, or critical care experience is preferred.

  • Performs according to Maryland Board of Physician or Maryland Board of Nursing standards and expanded job description procedural protocols.

  • Engages in leadership activities including, but not limited to, APP representation on organizational committees, training, education, mentorship of other APPs and other learners.
  • Participates in APP educational and other learning opportunities as they arise.
  • Demonstrates competence and skill in required tasks and procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and competency in required subspecialty.
  • Completes at least 50 hours of Category I CME every two years.
  • Complete 32 hours of trauma related CME.
  • Maintains a procedure complication rate less than the national average.
