About The Position

The Per Diem Acupuncturist will provide evidence-informed acupuncture and related integrative therapies within the Griffin Healthspan & Vitality Center. This role involves delivering individualized treatments for various conditions, including women's health, pain syndromes, stress, sleep disturbances, and oncology supportive care. The ideal candidate will be a Licensed Acupuncturist with a strong background in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and herbal medicine, skilled in TCM diagnostics and providing customized herbal recommendations. The Acupuncturist will create personalized treatment plans incorporating acupuncture, herbal, and lifestyle recommendations to complement conventional medical care. This position involves collaboration within an academic, multidisciplinary team including physicians, NPs, massage therapists, yoga/mind-body practitioners, registered dietitians, and health coaches.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a related CAM therapy such as Acupuncture, or equivalent from an accredited acupuncture college.
  • New York State Licensure as an Acupuncturist (issued by New York State Education Department).
  • National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) certification.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in a clinical acupuncture role or integrative therapy capacity, preferably with medically complex and/or oncology patients.
  • Demonstrated commitment to high-quality, evidence-informed integrative medicine practice.
  • Proficiency with EHR documentation and comfort working in an academic medical environment.
  • Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctorate degree in Acupuncture or related CAM field.
  • Additional license/certification in a complementary modality (e.g., Massage Therapy, Nutrition, Yoga, Reiki).
  • Experience participating in clinical research trials or academic projects.
  • Expertise in TCM diagnosis, herbal pharmacology, and formulas, including experience creating customized herbal formulas beyond standard patent remedies
  • Formal certificate or advanced training in Chinese herbal medicine in addition to acupuncture licensure.
  • Licensure/Certification in herbal medicine preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide individually tailored acupuncture treatments based on comprehensive assessment, including traditional East Asian/ TCM diagnostics (e.g., pulse and tongue) and review of medical history.
  • Utilize a variety of modalities such as acupuncture (body and auricular), acupressure, manual therapies (e.g., tui na), and adjunctive techniques as credentialed and approved (e.g., cupping, moxibustion) in line with departmental policies.
  • Provide care for patients with womens health issues, chronic musculoskeletal pain, neurologic conditions, stress/anxiety, sleep disturbances, and other indications deemed appropriate by the interdisciplinary team.
  • When aligned with NYU Langone policies and within scope of practice, conduct in-depth TCM consultations, including tongue and pulse analysis, and formulate individualized herbal recommendations using granules, patent remedies, or raw herbs for appropriate patients.
  • Ensure all herbal-related recommendations prioritize safety, considering herb properties, toxicity, contraindications, and potential interactions with prescription and over-the-counter Western medications, in close collaboration with the patients broader care team.
  • Educate patients on acupuncture treatment plans and, when relevant, herbal usage (e.g., dosage, frequency, preparation) and lifestyle modifications, such as dietary adjustments, stress management, and sleep hygiene, consistent with integrative care principles.
  • Apply rigorous safety and infection control practices aligned with institutional and regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with referring clinicians and the integrative team to align acupuncture (and any herbal-related) treatment plans with patients' overall care plans and medical status.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians and NPs regarding patient progress, symptom changes, and any clinical concerns.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions and team meetings.
  • Document all patient encounters, treatment plans, and responses to therapy in the EHR per NYU Langone standards, including TCM diagnoses and any herbal or lifestyle recommendations provided.
  • Maintain encounter volumes and charting requirements as set by the department.
  • Participate in research activities, data collection, and quality improvement initiatives related to integrative therapies, as requested.
  • Contribute to educational workshops and lectures in integrative medicine therapies for students, residents, fellows, and staff as appropriate.
