About The Position

Horace Mann Educators Corporation is seeking a Life and Retirement (L&R) Actuarial Intern for summer 2027. The intern will gain hands-on experience developing, modeling, and financially analyzing life insurance and retirement/annuity products tailored for educators. Under direct supervision from senior team members, the intern will also gain exposure to assumption setting, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance within the insurance industry. The role offers an opportunity to apply quantitative skills and learn how actuarial principles are used in real-world scenarios.

The position follows a hybrid work schedule, and the ideal candidate can travel to Horace Mann’s Springfield, Illinois offices weekly.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in actuarial science, finance, economics, statistics, mathematics, business, or a related field.
• Must have completed at least one actuarial exam through the Society of Actuaries (SOA) or the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS).
• Expertise in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and advanced functions.
• Strong analytical ability to analyze data, interpret trends, and make sound recommendations.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for presenting findings, collaborating with team members, and explaining complex concepts to stakeholders.
• Proactive and willing to learn and adapt to feedback, while managing multiple project deadlines efficiently.
• Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to prioritize work and time effectively.
• Open to growth and learning new skills.

Nice To Haves

• Exposure to programming languages such as SQL, Python, R, or VBA.
• Exposure to dedicated actuarial software.

Responsibilities

• Assist in building, maintaining, and running actuarial projection models, such as MG-ALFA or Excel-based tools, to evaluate the profitability of life and annuity products.
• Help prepare profit summaries, sensitivity testing, and risk analysis for senior audiences.
• Work with pricing assumptions, including mortality, lapse rates, and expenses, and learn how they affect product profitability.
• Gain exposure to experience data and how assumptions are developed.
• Review analysis of competitor product pricing, design, and features to help position Horace Mann products in line with company goals.
• Learn about Horace Mann’s insurance products and their actuarial considerations.
• Identify opportunities to improve or automate existing spreadsheets to increase team efficiency.
• Participate in department and project meetings, contribute ideas, and gain exposure to cross-functional collaboration.
