About The Position

Under general supervision and reporting to the Activity Co-ordinator, Fraser Hope Lodge, the Activity Worker carries out established recreational/leisure activity based programs designed to embed recreation/leisure in the lives of residents to facilitate quality of life experiences and to create the ambiance of a home-like setting.

Requirements

  • Grade 12, completion of recognized recreational courses plus two years' recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Valid class 4 vehicle license (unrestricted).
  • Food Safe Certificate.
  • Current certification in Basic First Aid & CPR Level C.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal effectively with others.
  • Ability to teach.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Carries out resident recreational/leisure programs such as arts and crafts, music, gardening and community outings as directed; sets up and organizes furnishings and equipment for activity projects, teaches the techniques of related activities to residents.
  • Carries out resident recreational/leisure activity programs outside the facility; checks that residents have appropriate clothing and necessary equipment for the activity; confirms details of proposed activity with nursing staff/medical staff; coordinates the movement of residents during the activity and teaches the techniques or related activities.
  • Oversees the residents' activities and reports problems and/or changes to the Activity Coordinator or designate. Works with Activity Co-ordinator and facility staff assisting in problem solving.
  • Provides direction to volunteers during recreational/leisure programs and demonstrates related techniques as required.
  • Attends client case conferences and other meetings as assigned to provide input.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment and materials and reports supply needs to appropriate staff.
  • Performs clerical tasks as related to Activity/Volunteer Programs.
  • As directed, transports residents on leisure trips, assisting residents getting in and out of the bus. Maintains records such as a gas and mileage log, resident participation and degree of involvement in activities.
  • Oversees a variety of maintenance duties such as cleaning, lubricating, changing oil, replacing spark plugs; visually inspecting tires, lifts and tie down systems, recommending any repairs as required.
  • Maintains a safe and tidy work environment for residents and staff.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
