About The Position

Performs a variety of receptionist, clerical and record keeping functions, including transcription of physicians' orders, compiling admission charts, scheduling patient appointments and maintaining inventory of equipment and supplies.

Requirements

  • Grade 12
  • Medical terminology
  • Graduation from a recognized Nursing Unit Clerk Program
  • One year's recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to type 40 wpm.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Processes physicians' orders as per established procedures, including transcribing orders, scheduling patient appointments, completing appropriate requisitions and flagging charts for Registered Nurses to check.
  • Acts as a unit receptionist for staff, patients and visitors by receiving and recording telephone messages, answering general inquiries and giving out room locations.
  • Compiles charts for new admissions, files documents related to patient data, completes necessary documentation on transfer or death and completes file reduction on discharge charts for medical records, according to established procedures.
  • Receives and records telephoned Laboratory reports and incorporates on patient file.
  • Maintains daily ward census according to facility requirements and compiles statistics for unit, such as occupancy and discharge figures.
  • Prepares requisitions for supplies, equipment, repairs and maintenance work for the unit as per established procedures.
  • Accepts calls from nursing staff regarding illnesses and absence from work, and communicates information received to nursing units and appropriate personnel. Calls in relief nursing staff according to predetermined guidelines and refers problems to supervisor. Maintains timekeeping records for regular and relief staff and submits to payroll.
  • Files unit documents, such as manual revisions and minutes of meetings.
  • Assists in orientating new personnel to nursing station procedures by providing general information as requested.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
