About The Position

The Activity Instructor plans and implements a barbering curriculum to prepare students for the Barber Apprentice examination and for work as a barber in a local shop. The role teaches barbering skills, etiquette, and professionalism, and provides students with opportunities to practice through partnerships with local organizations. The instructor also manages the setup, operation, cleanup, organization, inventory, and storage of class activities, supplies, and equipment. This is a non-exempt role for up to 10 hours per week.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Licensed Master Barber with a minimum of 5 years of experience.
• Ability to engage young people and set structure and limits in a group setting.
• Demonstrated written, verbal, organizational, and prioritization skills.
• Ability to transition between working independently with a high degree of self-initiative and working as part of a team.
• Proven participant sensibility and ability to communicate with staff at all levels.
• Commitment to working from a trauma-informed, strength-based, youth and family development perspective.

Nice To Haves

• Bilingual in Spanish.
• Experience developing group lesson plans and leading group activities.
• Prior teaching experience.

Responsibilities

• Create and facilitate a robust barbering curriculum.
• Develop partnerships with local organizations to provide free student haircuts and opportunities to practice barbering.
• Teach students barbering etiquette and professionalism.
• Set up, operate, and clean up activities.
• Organize, inventory, and store relevant supplies and equipment.
• Communicate expectations to students and colleagues about which aspects of classwork need strengthening and practice before the next class.
• Participate in staff trainings, meetings, and development activities as specified.
• Attend all staff meetings and staff development training sessions as specified.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
