About The Position

This position is primarily for educational or religious purposes and should be used for providing valuable educational experiences for the Intern. It is to give the Intern an opportunity to see how principles and practices learned in their educational institutions are applied in actual work setting. Under general supervision, the Intern performs work as assigned by the department. This paid internship is anticipated to last one year (12 months). This position is a part-time (28 hours per week) hourly, nonexempt position. The candidate must be currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from (within the last 12 months), an undergraduate- or graduate-degree program. Preference will be given to history/MLIS/Asian and Pacific studies students and those with language background within the areas.

Requirements

  • Paid Interns are qualified while enrolled in an educational institution and for one year following graduation.
  • Must sign a Paid Internship Engagement Letter.
  • Experience with the Pacific, southeast Asia or Asia.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or senior looking to graduate within 6 months) in history, library science, international studies, Asian studies, Asian languages, anthropology, religious studies, or a related field
  • Basic understanding of archival research, theory, and practices
  • Self-motivated and dependable
  • Excellent English and editorial skills
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, particularly Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • High degree of organizational skills, including scheduling and managing multiple projects
  • Respect for confidentiality
  • Respect for diversity in the workplace
  • Available to record video/audio interviews via a computer remotely with Church members in foreign countries
  • Available to work in the Church History Library (not remotely)
  • 28 hours per week. There is flexibility in specific scheduling (especially if you are attending school), but work must be accomplished between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

  • Experience conducting research and/or working in an archive, including arranging and describing archival collections or conducting oral histories
  • Knowledge of the historiography and sources of Church history
  • Understanding of Church history in a global context
  • Foreign language skills, both written and verbal
  • Familiarity with Asian and/or Pacific cultures

Responsibilities

  • Record oral histories and gather records from mission leaders, returned senior missionaries, missionaries, and Church members from Asia and the Pacific
  • Support digitization projects and processing
  • Process archival records in paper and/or electronic format acquired by the Church History Department
  • Assist in workflow management of records from acquisitions through processing, digitization, and storage
