About The Position

Selective's Momentum Trainee program is a 9-month program that develops insurance expertise through classroom learning, business rotations, and on-the-job training. The program launches trainees into full-time roles at Selective, including Accounting and other business areas. Training begins in July 2027 with 8 weeks at the Branchville, New Jersey office, after which trainees return to their regional offices. The Accounting Trainee learns the company's financial operations through on-the-job and classroom training, corporate-function shadowing outside accounting, and rotations through Accounting business units such as Reinsurance, Statutory Reporting, SEC Reporting, Expense Management, and Investment Accounting. The trainee learns basic accounting principles, the business, and how to support experienced finance professionals. All duties must be performed in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Accounting.
Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers and peers.
Sound, balanced, and timely decision-making skills.
Knowledge of accounting and finance terminology and its general application.
Ability to use Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.

Responsibilities

Reconcile general ledger account balances.
Maintain general ledger accounts.
Review financial statement accounts for accuracy.
Post journal entries.
Assist with month-end and quarter-end close processes.
Assist with external reporting to state insurance departments and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
Assist with external reporting to the SEC.
Advise management of unusual trends, budget variances, difficulties obtaining information, or other pending issues.
