About The Position

This position is responsible for the maintenance of complex patient accounts, which includes a variety of accounting and patient records. It involves determining the appropriateness of all transactions (charges, payments, and adjustments) on a specialized billing system and tracking client records from admission to discharge. The work requires considerable knowledge of Federal, State, and Departmental accounting methods, rules, and regulations, as well as significant judgment in maintaining specialized patient accounts. The accounts and records are subject to periodic audits by various agencies. The position communicates with CBO staff, DSOHF Utilization Review, Medical Records and Patient Financial Services, fiscal intermediaries, guarantors, and responsible parties to obtain eligibility data, ID numbers, and certification information. Notes are applied to each account detailing all actions taken, with attention to correct spelling and professionalism. The role is also responsible for documenting problematic system or third-party payer issues that impact receipts and reporting these to CBO Management.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in accounting from an appropriately accredited institution, and two years of accounting experience OR High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of experience in accounting work OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of electronic inpatient and outpatient healthcare billing systems, including compiling and submitting paper UB‑04 and CMS‑1500 claim forms.
  • Experience processing electronic healthcare claims for inpatient and outpatient services, working with electronic remittance advices, and using claims clearinghouses.
  • Demonstrated experience billing healthcare patient accounts and managing collections for Medicare, Medicare HMO, Medicaid Managed Care Organizations, NC Tracks, commercial insurers, patients, and guarantors.
  • Working knowledge of Federal and North Carolina General Statutes, guarantor eligibility rules, and reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting, auditing inpatient and outpatient accounts, cash management, A/R, and A/P.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office with strong Excel skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities for interacting with the public.

Responsibilities
