About The Position

The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking an Accountant to work at the Vandalia Correctional Center. This position is responsible for preparing monthly financial reports and maintaining accounts payable journal. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college, with courses in business administration and accounting, or four (4) years of technical accounting experience.
  • Qualifying state employees in the employee Upward Mobility Program may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated requirements for this class.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
  • Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers at least two (2) years of professional experience working with accounting and auditing theories, principles, methods, and procedures.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of professional experience working with the laws, rules, and regulations relating to state or non-state accounting or auditing procedures.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of professional experience working with office methods, procedures, standard office accounting machines, and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Posts accounts payable to the Funds Accounting and Commissary Trading System (FACTS) for Individuals in Custody and Employee Benefit Funds, matching receiving reports with invoices and committee approvals.
  • Implements workflow activities between multiple Business Office functions.
  • Prepares financial reports monthly by major detail object codes and of previous account payable balances, current month invoices, paid vouchers, and final accounts payable figures.
  • Reconciles travel advance fund advances against amount vouchered when check is received.
  • Serves as Business Office representative on the Individuals in Custody Benefit Fund Committee preparing a monthly financial summary report of individuals in custody (profits transferred), monthly disbursements and amount available to spend for the committee’s review.
  • Posts all miscellaneous collections cash receipts.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of those enumerated above.
