About The Position

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking to hire an Accountant. This position will establish and maintain contract obligation documents, perform analysis of obligated amounts to ensure invoices are processed timely, serve as working supervisor, and review source documents to ensure information entered in the automated accounting system is correct. In addition, this position will develop processes for transactions requiring obligations and ensure all policies and procedures are followed. The ideal candidate would be self-motivated, task oriented, and organized. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four (4) years of college with courses in business administration and accounting or four (4) years of technical accounting experience.
  • Qualifying state employees in the employee Upward Mobility Program, may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated requirements for this classification.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen.
  • Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers at least five (5) years of professional accounting experience.
  • Prefers at least five (5) years of professional auditing experience.
  • Prefers at least three (3) years of professional experience evaluating accounting problems of moderate difficulty such as rectifying discrepancies between financial system reports and developing a plan to resolve issues.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Prefers at least three (3) years of professional experience performing detailed work involving application of accounting theory to routine accounting or auditing problems such as with assets and liabilities.
  • Prefers at least three (3) years of professional experience interpreting finance laws and applying them appropriately to the contract obligation process.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of professional experience using a Statewide Accounting System.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of professional experience utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook and/or similar type of computer programs.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes and maintains contract obligation documents.
  • Performs continual analysis of obligated amounts ensuring invoices can be processed in a timely manner.
  • Serves as working supervisor.
  • Reviews source documents to assure accurate information is entered into the automated accounting system.
  • Develops functional process for establishing and monitoring transactions requiring obligations.
  • Works to ensure that all policies and procedures regarding contract oversight of obligated amounts is followed.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties listed above.
