About The Position

The Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections – Corrections Services is seeking an Accountant to join the business office at the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in St. Gabriel, LA. Requirements

  • Three years of experience in accounting, auditing, financial operations, payroll, or banking.
  • OR Six years of full-time experience in any field plus twenty-four semester hours in accounting.
  • OR A bachelor’s degree with twenty-four semester hours in accounting.
  • OR A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, management, economics, or statistics.
  • OR An advanced degree in accounting, finance, business administration, management, economics, quantitative methods, or statistics.
  • OR Possession of a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.
  • Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.
  • Authorization for HR Office of DPS&C-Corrections Services to contact prior employers to check references under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) by answering ‘YES’ to the PREA question.
  • Official documentation for any degree, certificate, special license, or DD-214 must be verified prior to hire.
  • Accompanying transcript for verification if qualifying experience is based on college credit/college hours.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes Quickbooks accounting system to maintain the accounts for the EHCC inmate organizations and imprest fund, including cash receipts, daily deposits, cash disbursements, issuing checks, verifying invoices, and processing the purchases journal.
  • Prepares and approves quarterly financial statements for the inmate canteen operation, including balance sheets and profit and loss statements, to clearly present the financial position and make recommendations for cost containment, pricing adjustments, or other management insights.
  • Performs accounting for all agency funds, such as the inmate organization fund and other department-approved funds for EHCC, using several PC-based accounting systems.
  • Prepares general fund deposits of all self-generated funds received by EHCC and maintains complete filed documentation for all deposits.
  • Enters transactions into LaGov for classification by the incumbent after deposits are prepared and verified by the Accountant 3.
