About The Position

A well-established non-profit / faith-based organization in the Kitchener area is seeking a full-time Accountant to oversee day-to-day accounting, payroll, charitable receipting, compliance, budgeting, and financial administration. This role is ideal for someone who is comfortable working independently, managing recurring deadlines, and supporting a small-office environment with professionalism, discretion, and care. The Accountant plays a key role in maintaining financial integrity, supporting informed decision-making, and ensuring that financial processes are accurate, timely, compliant, and aligned with the organization’s values. Requirements

  • Hands on experience in accounting, bookkeeping, payroll administration, or financial administration.
  • Post-secondary education in accounting, bookkeeping, business administration, finance, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience with financial recordkeeping, bank reconciliations, financial reporting, payment processing, and payroll administration.
  • Working knowledge of Canadian payroll and regulatory requirements, including CRA remittances and year-end payroll reporting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, organization, and follow-through.
  • The ability to work independently while keeping leaders and stakeholders appropriately informed.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • A high degree of discretion when handling confidential financial, donor, payroll, and organizational information.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a non-profit, charitable, church, or faith-based organization would be considered an asset.
  • Experience with charitable receipting, CRA requirements for registered charities, audit or year-end working papers, accounting/payroll/donor management software, or serving as the sole accounting resource in a small organization would also be helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate financial records, including donations, receipts, deposits, bank transactions, operating expenditures, and supporting documentation.
  • Prepare bank reconciliations, journal entries, payments, monthly financial statements, and routine reports for leadership or governance review.
  • Support financial analysis, reporting, and information-sharing to help leadership plan and make informed decisions.
  • Maintain accurate donation and contribution records across multiple giving methods, including cash, cheque, e-transfer, online platforms, and pre-authorized giving.
  • Issue official charitable donation/tax receipts in accordance with applicable Canada Revenue Agency requirements.
  • Manage electronic banking activities, vendor payments, EFTs, payroll deposits, bill payments, cheque deposits, and related documentation.
  • Administer payroll, including calculations, direct deposits, deductions, taxable benefits, remittances, T4s, ROEs, and related payroll records.
  • Support benefits administration, including enrolments, changes, terminations, and related documentation.
  • Prepare compliance filings and reports, which may include CRA payroll remittances, HST filings or rebate claims, charitable or not-for-profit annual filings, WSIB reporting, and other government requirements.
  • Prepare working papers and supporting documentation for the annual audit or financial review.
  • Coordinate and support the annual budgeting process, including budget schedules, documentation, and budget-to-actual reporting.
  • Recommend process improvements to strengthen accuracy, efficiency, internal controls, and responsible financial stewardship.
  • Research and resolve financial issues.
  • Provide advice and direction as the primary organizational contact for internal and external financial and payroll inquires.
  • Provide other needed administrative and operational support.
