About The Position

The Accountant position supports the organization’s financial operations by performing general accounting, financial reporting, reconciliation, and analysis activities. This role works closely with finance leadership to ensure accurate and timely financial statements, compliance with accounting standards, and effective stewardship of organizational resources. Responsibilities include support for operating funds as well as investment, endowment, and trust accounting, audit preparation, and process improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible accounting experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Experience with preparing and reconciling bank, investment, endowment, and trust accounts.
  • Experience with financial reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency with Excel and financial systems; experience with cloud-based accounting software preferred.
  • Skilled communicating effectively with individuals at all levels of an organization.
  • Has strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Must work well independently with a strong initiative and ownership of work
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume revenue environment
  • Has the ability to work with diverse and/or low-income populations, including those who may be experiencing homelessness, unstable housing, and/or mental illness.

Nice To Haves

  • Non-Profit accounting and grant funding experience preferred. i.e. has experience with programmatic, grant-funded, or medical services revenue.
  • Familiarity with medical billing, third-party payers, or government reimbursement (e.g., Medicaid, Medicare, managed care).
  • CPA or progress toward CPA designation preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform month-end and year-end close activities, including general ledger journal entries, account reconciliations, financial analysis, and preparation of internal and external financial reports.
  • Prepare and reconcile bank, investment, endowment, and trust accounts; investigate variances and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Support accounting for investments, endowments, and trusts, including recording activity, tracking balances, monitoring restrictions, and assisting with related reporting.
  • May assist with revenue and receivables accounting, including allowances, accruals, and reconciliations, as applicable.
  • Provide financial and accounting support to program, operational, and administrative teams as needed.
  • Prepare ad-hoc financial analyses and reports to support budgeting, forecasting, and financial decision-making.
  • Prepare audit schedules and workpapers; assist with annual financial statement audits and tax filings (e.g., Form 990 or equivalent).
  • Develop, document, and maintain accounting procedures; collaborate across departments to improve processes, internal controls, and operational efficiency.
  • Serve as backup for other accounting functions and participate in cross-training activities.
