About The Position

This is a fully remote independent contractor consulting engagement for experienced tax professionals contributing to an AI training and tax-reasoning project. The work focuses primarily on interpreting U.S. sales and use tax statutes across state jurisdictions, reviewing relevant regulations and selected federal tax provisions, and evaluating whether AI-generated formal interpretations accurately reflect statutory requirements. No prior AI experience is required. The professional will turn statutory language into clear, testable evaluation criteria and rubrics; assess AI-generated translations against those rubrics; and develop self-contained scenarios that test legal requirements, exceptions, thresholds, and edge cases. The role also involves analyzing complex statutory logic, identifying ambiguity where appropriate, and providing precise written feedback through a digital review platform. Project scope, jurisdiction coverage, workload, and evaluation standards may change according to project requirements. Work must not use confidential or proprietary information belonging to an employer, client, institution, or other third party.

Requirements

  • Active CPA licence, Chartered Accountant designation, or experience as a U.S. tax attorney.
  • Strong experience interpreting U.S. tax statutes and regulations.
  • Ability to analyze statutory language rather than solely prepare tax returns.
  • Strong understanding of legal logic, including conditions, thresholds, AND/OR structures, exceptions, and defined terms.
  • Excellent structured written communication skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, particularly regarding exclusions, exceptions, and edge cases.
  • Strong analytical reasoning and ability to support conclusions clearly.
  • Comfort working within digital review and quality-assurance platforms.

Nice To Haves

  • Sales and use tax or broader state and local tax experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience across multiple U.S. state tax jurisdictions is highly valuable.
  • Enrolled Agent designation or relevant federal tax experience is advantageous.
  • Experience reviewing AI-generated or technology-driven tax content is beneficial.
  • Background in training teams or providing written feedback on legal or tax language is a plus.
  • Interest in the intersection of tax compliance and technology is highly relevant.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret sales and use tax statutes across U.S. state jurisdictions and review relevant state regulations and selected federal tax provisions.
  • Analyze statutory language at the subsection level, identifying conditions, thresholds, exceptions, exclusions, and defined terms.
  • Distinguish explicit statutory requirements from unsupported interpretations.
  • Convert statutory provisions into discrete, testable evaluation criteria and develop rubrics independently of AI-generated outputs.
  • Ensure evaluation criteria are grounded directly in statutory language, clear for consistent application, and assigned appropriate severity levels.
  • Review formal AI-generated tax-statute translations and score them against established rubrics using structured pass/fail criteria.
  • Verify that outputs correctly represent conditions, thresholds, AND/OR logic, and statutory exceptions; identify omitted, distorted, or incorrectly represented requirements.
  • Provide precise explanations supporting evaluation decisions.
  • Develop self-contained test scenarios for failed criteria, with explicit facts, dates, monetary amounts, and expected outcomes.
  • Create edge cases involving exclusions, thresholds, and statutory exceptions, ensuring scenarios directly test the relevant legal requirement.
  • Analyze conditional and nested statutory logic, including relevant exceptions, cross-references, exclusions, and defined terms.
  • Flag genuine ambiguity where statutory language permits multiple interpretations and distinguish model errors from legitimate interpretive uncertainty.
  • Submit evaluations through a digital review platform and produce clear, concise, self-contained written feedback.
  • Document discrepancies and reasoning precisely, maintain consistency across repeated assignments, and provide actionable feedback to improve technology-driven tax systems.
