About The Position

The Accountant – Indirect Tax is a member of Badger Meter’s accounting team and manages day-to-day sales and use tax and other indirect tax functions. The role supports compliance and timely tax return filing, ensures appropriate tax treatment of transactions, and serves as the primary administrator of Avalara sales tax software. It works cross-functionally to ensure tax is correctly applied to customer quotes and invoices. The position also supports tax audits, responds to jurisdiction notices and internal inquiries, researches indirect tax issues, and coordinates sales tax onboarding for newly acquired companies. The role collaborates with accounting and other departments to maintain accurate tax classification and identify process improvements, while adapting to evolving business needs.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel.
Ability to learn and effectively use new software applications and technology.
Strong attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

Two to three years of accounting or tax experience, including at least one year of sales and use tax or other indirect tax experience.
Proficiency with ERP systems and tax automation software.

Responsibilities

Perform monthly journal entries and reconcile indirect tax general ledger accounts, resolving variances.
Prepare and file monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns across multiple states and jurisdictions.
Maintain and monitor customer sales tax exemption certificates and related documentation to support appropriate tax treatment and audit readiness.
Administer Avalara, maintaining and optimizing the software to support accurate tax determination and ongoing compliance.
Assist with sales and use tax audits by gathering documentation and responding to information requests.
Manage the internal tax email address and respond to messages in a timely manner.
Work with Credit and Sales to investigate and correct sales tax errors and ensure accurate tax calculation and reporting.
Review and process credit memos to resolve customer sales tax issues.
Monitor and respond to notices and correspondence from tax jurisdictions and assist in resolving them.
Research indirect tax issues when necessary, identify applicable authorities, regulations, and guidance, summarize findings, and propose solutions for review with management and external tax advisors as appropriate.
Collaborate with Accounting, Accounts Payable, Credit, Customer Care, and Procurement on transaction tax classification and treatment and identify process improvements.
Support and coordinate sales tax onboarding for newly acquired companies, aligning processes with Badger Meter’s compliance framework.
Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to support accounting functions and evolving business needs.
