About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Fiscal Services Management, participates as a member of the Fiscal Department team in maintaining agency financial operations in an efficient manner. This role involves utilizing a computerized accounting system for the production of timely and accurate monthly financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, and government reports. The position also includes analyzing asset and liability account balances, participating in budget development, performing bank reconciliations, and assisting with accounts payable and claims billing. Additionally, the Accountant I will help update fiscal procedures, train program staff, and support the agency safety program. Recordkeeping responsibilities include maintaining filing systems, preparing journal entries, and ensuring all necessary backups and adjustments are in place.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree in accounting and/or related field or 2+ years’ experience.
  • State regulations require a physical examination, current tuberculosis test, and verified fingerprint and criminal records clearance before beginning work.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Current personal vehicle insurance or safe driving record sufficient to ensure insurability through Agency policy.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of parents, employees of the organization, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent.
  • Ability to apply generally accepted accounting principles to routine activities.
  • Ability to analyze accounting activity and make routine projections.
  • Ability to understand and use a variety of computer applications and appropriate software, including spreadsheets and word processing; and workplace electronic technology, including internet access, and e-mail.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience and familiarity with nonprofit fund accounting is desirable.
  • Experience in budget development is desirable.
  • Intermediate personal computer skills including, but not limited to: design and develop databases; computerized presentation/training materials; and advanced graphics design applications, may be necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Produce timely and accurate monthly financial reports, including monthly income statements, balance sheets, and government reports.
  • Analyze asset and liability account balances, keeping accurate back up, and prepare adjustments as necessary.
  • Participate in budget development; load budget data to accounting system; update financial projections, monitor expenses, as directed; allocate costs; and maintain files.
  • Perform bank reconciliation.
  • Participate in proofing payroll time entry data.
  • Participate in entry or review Accounts Payable to ensure consistency with policies.
  • Handle claims and other contract billing.
  • Assist with periodic review and update of fiscal procedures; train program staff as necessary in fiscal procedures.
  • Support the agency safety program.
  • Maintain filing system and record keeping, including all necessary back up and adjustments; prepare journal entries, as appropriate to accomplish goals.
  • Attend training and informational meetings as directed.
  • Maintain confidentiality with respect to information and records concerning children, families, and staff.
