About The Position

The University of New Haven is seeking an Accessibility Specialist to assist the Director and Assistant Director with the development and implementation of programs and services provided by the Accessibility Resources Center. This role ensures the University's compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act, and other applicable laws. The Specialist will provide direct services to students with disabilities, participate in the development of office policy and procedures, programming, and advising, and contribute to a diverse and vibrant university community.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree and two years' experience in education, social sciences, psychology, rehabilitation, or a related discipline is required.
  • Broad knowledge of various disabilities as well as experience working with and supporting adults with disabilities in an educational setting is required.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with Accessible Information Management (AIM) database or other databases for disability service department management.
  • Working knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 - Amended 2010, and other applicable federal state and local laws.
  • Knowledge of and experience with assessing disability documentation from varying sources and determining reasonable accommodations.
  • Broad understanding of reasonable accommodations and services used by students with disabilities in higher education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of assistive technology applications and their use in assisting persons with disabilities in an educational setting.
  • Demonstrated experience effectively managing staff and resources.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the social and legal issues that impact services for students with disabilities in higher education.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree and two years' experience in the areas of education, social sciences, psychology, rehabilitation, or a related discipline OR an equivalent combination of educational training and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and implement Auxiliary Services such as notetaking, academic participation assistants, interpreting/transcribing and closed captioning services, readers, and scribes.
  • Serve as AIM administrator responsible for updating and maintaining AIM office management software.
  • Monitor Assistive Technology equipment and software.
  • Train students with disabilities requiring assistive technologies on their use.
  • Oversee the Planning and Implementation of the DREAM Transition Program; assess and analyze program data for growth and improvement.
  • Review documentation and conduct new student intakes.
  • Assist with the review and dissemination of accommodation letters.
  • Develop and conduct trainings as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the Accessibility Resources Center.
