About The Position

This role provides proactive mentorship and academic coaching to ensure the holistic success of students. While this position serves as the primary advisor of record for an assigned group of traditional undergraduate students, it functions as a collaborative member of the broader division. As such, the individual will maintain a diverse advising portfolio that includes GW Online students and Student-Athletes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education or a related field.
  • 1-2 years of related work or training.
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office Suite and campus-wide databases (e.g., Banner, Cornerstone).
  • Willingness to contribute to Gardner-Webb University’s Christian mission and the Division of Student Success’ values: access, empowerment, inclusivity, partnership, and growth.
  • Strong "customer-friendly" skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to handle confidential information (FERPA) with professional integrity.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a student peer mentor or advising assistant is a plus.
  • Previous experience or a strong desire to work with diverse student populations, including online students and traditional campus students.

Responsibilities

  • Advises program requirements, course selection, and registration procedures to both prospective and current student populations.
  • Provides academic coaching to assist with identifying, developing, and implementing learning strategies and study skills specific to course requirements.
  • Contacts and intervenes with students who have been referred as having excessive absences and accumulating low grades, and any student deemed academically high-risk.
  • Assists students on academic warning with academic success plans.
  • Monitors and contacts students who have not registered each semester.
  • Serve as a designated academic advisor for GW Online distance learners and Student-Athletes.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with colleagues in a team approach to ensure student success.
  • Helps with outreach for students on caseload that have unpaid financial balances.
  • Refers students to appropriate academic staff and support resources and collaborates with others to monitor and accelerate the academic progress of the students referred.
